Editorial

All curbside recycling stakeholders are invited to contribute to the improvement of the system by considering every step that goes into processing recyclable materials. Companies that generate containers, packaging and printed matter are key players in the system’s performance and have an opportunity to make wise packaging material choices. While recyclability and disassembly are two of several crucial considerations, packaging ecodesign and optimization constitute strategic levers that generate economic and reputational benefits for companies who take concrete action. If you would like some guidance and reference tools to help you with your initiative, look into the OptimEco information kit and packaging ecodesign training now being launched. They are highly useful decision-making tools.

2015 SCHEDULE OF CONTRIBUTIONS: STATUS UPDATE

Companies and organizations should expect consultations on the 2015 Schedule of Contributions to take place next spring. The Government of Quebec is currently carrying out a municipal residual materials characterization “at destination” study, i.e. the materials sorting centres receive. The results of the study, due next March, will be considered in the calculation of municipal net costs for the 2015 Schedule of Contributions. The study will provide data on the percentage of orphan materials, also known as “other materials,” placed in recycling bins. Part of the cost of processing these materials is deductible from the financial compensation paid by industry under the 2015 Schedule. You will remember that, following representations made by ÉEQ and its partners, a temporary measure consisting in a 7.5% deduction was applied to the 2013 and 2014 Schedules of Contributions.

RECOVERY STATIONS AT THE FESTIVAL WESTERN DE SAINT-TITE: ÉEQ JOINS SOLENO RECYCLAGE ON A PILOT PROJECT DESIGNED TO DETERMINE FESTIVAL-GOERS’ NEEDS

In a first for the Saint-Tite town council, the city has proudly agreed to install materials recovery stations for visitors to its famous Festival Western. This environmental initiative was made possible thanks to cooperative efforts by ÉEQ and Soleno Recyclage, a major plastics recycler in Quebec. ÉEQ is pleased to be associated with this pilot project and hopes to better understand festival-goers’ recycling habits, especially since materials characterization carried out by Soleno Recyclage will provide data for evaluating recovery infrastructures needed for this type of event. Once the results of the pilot project are in, follow-up actions will be considered in order to contribute to the “recover more and better” mindset.

Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) is the organization that develops the Schedule of Contributions and collects company contributions, which are then redistributed to finance municipal curbside recycling services in Quebec. ÉEQ also encourages innovation and best practices in order to optimize the recyclable materials value chain. To do so, ÉEQ cooperates, on the one hand, with companies to reduce quantities of materials at the source and encourage the use of recyclable materials, as well as with municipalities and other stakeholders to increase recycling and the economic value of recovered materials.

Created by companies that put containers, packaging and printed matter on Quebec’s market, ÉEQ is a private non-profit organization that was accredited by RECYC-QUÉBEC in 2005 under the Environment Quality Act.
