ÉEQ reminds companies that the remaining 60% of their total contribution under the 2014 Schedule of Contributions is due by January 26, 2015, failing which interest charges will apply. Please note that our offices will close for the Holiday period, i.e. from noon on December 24, 2014, to January 4, 2015, inclusively. However, companies and organizations may still update their file and submit previous Company Reports and payments during that period.  MINISTER HEURTEL APPOINTS ÉEQ’S CEO AS CO-CHAIR OF THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON RESIDUAL MATERIALS
On November 10, 2014, David Heurtel, Minister of Développement durable, de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, announced the creation of the Comité-conseil sur les matières résiduelles (advisory committee on residual materials). Maryse Vermette, ÉEQ’s CEO and co-chair of the committee, stressed that, of the five major priorities identified, the optimization and reevaluation of compensation plan stakeholder roles and responsibilities is of most importance to us. Our work in this regard aligns well with the mandate contributing companies have given us. The committee plans to submit its recommendations to the Minister by the end of 2015.  QUEBECERS AND ECO-RESPONSIBLE PACKAGING: THE DEMAND IS THERE!
ÉEQ joined the Responsible Consumption Observatory (RCO) to conduct the 1 st Responsible Consumption Barometer Survey to determine Quebecers’ perceptions about ecodesigned containers, packaging and printed matter. The results released last fall will help companies better understand how consumers perceive ecodesign and, in particular, show that, if equally priced, almost three out of four Quebecers would choose a product with eco-responsible packaging. Increasingly well informed, consumers understand that eco-responsible packaging goes beyond recycled content, and they recognize companies’ efforts: More than 60% of Quebecers say that including quantified statements regarding eco-responsible characteristics on packaging is important.  TAKE PART IN TAILORED TOURS OF SORTING CENTRE AND RECYCLER INSTALLATIONS
The materials recycling industry opens its doors! Manufacturers and companies that finance Quebec’s curbside recycling program are invited to register for these unique recycling installation tours and learn about industrial issues relating to materials’ early- and end-of-life cycle. Discover what happens to the containers, packaging and printed matter you put on the market after they are picked up. Come and chat with industry peers and see for yourself how your packaged or printed products can deliver improved performance, be optimized and be made more recyclable.  THE 1st CURBSIDE RECYCLING AMBASSADORS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
On October 16, 2014, ÉEQ and its partners announced the first projects by Curbside Recycling Ambassadors at a press conference held in the presence of many officials, including David Heurtel, Minister of Développement durable, de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, Marguerite Blais, MNA for Saint-Henri-Sainte-Anne, and comedian Étienne Dano, spokesperson for the Réseau des maisons de jeunes du Québec (RMJQ). A budget envelope of $700,000 was provided by Quebec’s curbside recycling industry to help the youth centres get teens involved in rallying projects that will both increase the number of pieces of recovery equipment in their municipality and raise public awareness.  TRAINING ON HOW TO INTEGRATE PACKAGING ECODESIGN IN YOUR BUSINESS STRATEGY
ÉEQ recently welcomed approximately fifteen company representatives to the very 1st packaging ecodesign training session: One more step towards integrating environmental criteria in business processes! A tour of the Tiru sorting centre in Montréal and in-company coaching is included in the training program. The comments received at the end of the day say it all: “The training is provided in an innovative format. It’s useful to work in small groups so we can discuss issues. The sorting centre tour helps us better understand the inner workings of recycling operations. It’s a great benefit to have expert advice on specific company projects.” More information »

SOLENO-RECYCLAGE: THE MAURICIE REGION CAN NOW COUNT ON A NEW ECONOMIC DRIVER
ÉEQ commends Groupe RCM − Yamachiche and Soleno, in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, for creating Soleno Recyclage in the Mauricie region. The new company now provides dozens of people with employment and will play an important role in driving the economy and fuelling environmental innovation, not to mention having a positive effect on the community by employing workers with special needs. Soleno-Recyclage will step up research on multilayer cardboard and plastic film recycling as well as develop cardboard fibre, aluminium and HDPE products using recycled packaging. What’s more, the company is working on a complete plan for recovering and recycling plastics from agricultural operations. All these initiatives will contribute to giving a second life to Quebec’s recycled materials.

 SMALL FOOD STORES MASSIVELY SUPPORT TRANSFERRING DEPOSIT CONTAINERS TO THE CURBSIDE RECYCLING SYSTEM
ÉEQ attended the summit organized by the Association québécoise des dépanneurs en alimentation (AQDA) on October 27, 2014, in the company of Jean-Denis Girard, Minister-in-charge, Petites et Moyennes Entreprises, Allégement réglementaire et Développement économique régional. During the summit, members expressed massive support for transferring single-use deposit containers to the curbside recycling system.

Initiator and partner of a number of projects in 2014 focused on innovation, sharing, best practices and optimization, ÉEQ has clearly demonstrated its willingness to go beyond the financing of curbside recycling. The Best Practices Initiative was launched, bringing together municipal representatives from the regions of Lanaudière, the greater Québec City area and Outaouais, and we plan to visit other regions of the province in 2015. ÉEQ also supports the innovation efforts of companies financially responsible for the end-of-life management of the materials they generate with a complete set of packaging and printed matter ecodesign tools. 2015 will be a year rich in activities and projects to optimize curbside recycling and consolidate the compensation plan.
