A lot has been written about curbside recycling this year. It was also the focus of a vast optimization operation led by ÉEQ and its partners to give Quebec an increasingly efficient and effective collection system.



Whether through our Best Practices Initiative for Effective Curbside Recycling, thanks to which we work cooperatively with municipalities in optimizing various aspects of materials collection, or our continuous cooperation with various actors in the curbside recycling value chain, we endeavour to improve this means of mass transit for recyclable materials on a daily basis.



During this past year, major announcements were made, including our commitment to invest in order to equip sorting centres with technologies for sorting and cleaning all glass generated in Quebec and, more recently, our financial partnership with the École de technologie supérieure to support research on integrating glass collected via curbside recycling as asphalt and road foundation components.



We also organized the important 2015 “Solutions That Matter” Forum in January 2015, which resulted in an overview of the current situation and the identification of five levers for optimizing curbside recycling. We are now focusing our actions on those levers so as to ensure that our curbside recycling system is increasingly efficient as we go forward.



We will be back after a well-earned Holiday break with new projects firmly geared towards innovation and optimization.

Results of consultation meetings on the 2015-2016 Schedule of Contributions

On November 17 and 19, Éco Entreprises Québer presented its draft 2015 and 2016 Schedules of Contributions to companies and organizations subject to the compensation plan. Participants had the option of attending either the Montréal or Toronto meeting, or joining in via webinar.  While over 170 persons attended the live meetings, those who were unable to be with us had until December 8, 2015, to join the conversation on our website, where all the information is still available for viewing even though the participation period is now over.



The comments we received as part of this consultation process will be considered in the final 2015-2016 Schedules of Contributions and consultation report, which will be submitted to the Board of Directors at the end of January 2016.
 
 

ÉEQ offices close for the Holiday period

ÉEQ will take a break for the Holidays. Our offices will therefore be closed from December 24 to January 1, inclusively. We will be back to serve you on January 4 to start 2016 with renewed enthusiasm.
      
     
Announcement of a major partnership to give a second life to recycled glass

A press conference was held on November 30 at the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) for the official announcement of a partnership between ÉTS, the SAQ, the City of Montréal, RECYC-QUÉBEC and ÉEQ for a research project on the integration of glass collected via curbside recycling as a component of asphalt and road foundation materials. The research project also received the support of Transports Québec, who considers it an excellent opportunity to improve the quality and durability of our roads while reducing our environmental footprint. If results are positive, glass containers that Quebecers place in their recycling bin could end up in the asphalt used for our roads, among other purposes!
     
    
Gala Envirolys 2015

The 6th edition of the event celebrating companies involved in Quebec’s green economy was held on November 23 in Montréal. ÉEQ wishes to congratulate Gaudreau Environnement and Cascades on their respective prizes in the Innovation and Environmental Protection category and ICI+ Green Project category.



Recently, the town of Saint-Pascal selected Gaudreau Environnement’s ecological paving stones for its 100% ecological and recycled space located in front of City Hall. Each square foot covered by these paving stones contains an average of 533 plastic bags and 25 wine bottles.
     
     
Quebecers and packaging

As part of the 2015 edition of the Responsible Consumption Barometer Survey in Quebec, ÉEQ is pleased to announce the findings of a survey conducted by the Observatoire de la Consommation Responsable designed to better understand the myths and realities that affect Quebecers’ relationship with packaging in the food and household product sectors. Geneviève Dionne, our Ecodesign Advisor, was interviewed on the subject for the “Bien dans son assiette” show on Radio-Canada radio.
  
  

  

Over 160 participants in the Best Practices Initiative during its 1st year

The Best Practices team was particularly busy this past year. Over 160 participants attended at least 1 of 20 workshops held in 2015. An overview of the local situation was drawn up for each meeting in the nine administrative regions visited, where municipal representatives were given the opportunity to share their experience and successes and discuss options for optimizing curbside recycling services.  In 2016, we will visit new regions and develop new topics and tools to continue reviews and optimization initiatives.
 
 

Involved and creative youth!

If participation rates in the Curbside Recycling Ambassadors Program are any indication, youths continue to be inspired by environmental protection and making a difference in their community. A total of 34 youth centres from the Regroupement des maisons de jeunes du Québec submitted a subvention request in order to carry out an awareness project, for a grand total of more than $100,000. Following the two suggested scenarios, participants could either urge their municipality to install more away-from-home materials recovery equipment or raise public awareness about the importance of using that equipment to recycle when they are outside their home.
 
 

Second campaign for ÉEQ and Éric Salvail

ÉEQ’s most recent ad campaign featuring Éric Salvail was a great success. In addition to airing on TV and the Internet, four video capsules were developed for viewing on social media. The people’s favourite, garnering 250,000 views on Facebook, was the one that explains who finances materials recovery. To date, ÉEQ’s advertising campaign has focused on raising public awareness, getting people to recycle more and reaching out to companies that are not yet on board with their contributions.

Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) is the organization that develops the Schedule of Contributions and collects company contributions, which are then redistributed to finance municipal curbside recycling services in Quebec. ÉEQ also encourages innovation and sharing of best practices in order to optimize the recyclable materials value chain. To do so, ÉEQ cooperates, on the one hand, with companies to reduce quantities of materials at the source and encourage the use of recyclable materials, as well as with municipalities to increase recycling and the economic value of recovered materials.



ÉEQ is a private non-profit organization created by companies that put containers, packaging and printed matter on Quebec’s market to represent them. The organization was accredited by RECYC-QUÉBEC in 2005 in accordance with the Environment Quality Act.
