Are you a brand owner, a distributor, or a business that markets containers, packaging, or printed paper in Quebec? If so, you are among the producers that form the foundation of the curbside recycling system.

On this page, you will find key information and resources to help you understand and fulfill your role.

You are the pillars of the curbside recycling system.

Quebec’s curbside recycling system is based on the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). EPR makes businesses responsible for the packaged products, containers, and printed paper they put on the market, from design to end-of-life. It is intended to keep the curbside recycling system running smoothly while improving the recycling and management of collected materials.

As a producer, you have two main responsibilities under the EPR framework.

As the organization in charge of managing curbside recycling in Quebec, we are here to help.

Two core producer obligations

1. Help finance curbside recycling

Every year, you must required to do the following:

Why a mandatory financial participation?

The annual PFP serves a vital purpose. In addition to making curbside door-to-door collection possible throughout Quebec, it helps fund the opening of new sorting centres, the extension of collection services to remote areas, and supports the development of education and awareness campaigns on material separation at source.

Your contribution helps ensure the future of the curbside recycling system.

Are you a member of Éco Entreprises Québec?

Brand holders, distributors, and original suppliers of containers, packaging, and printed paper in Quebec are required by law to become members of Éco Entreprises Québec, which involves signing a membership contract. It is a commitment to working with you and on your behalf to improve the curbside recycling system. Signing the membership contract is an obligation and not a choice.

You can sign your contract right now or by submitting your first report on our portal.

2. Apply ecodesign best practices

  • Choose recyclable materials for your containers, packaging, and printed paper
  • Integrate recycled materials and eliminate harmful substances from the design process
  • Prioritize local suppliers and materials which are easy to recycle

These types of practices not only lead to lower collection, transport, and sorting costs. They ensure that containers, packaging, and printed paper which are easy to recycle are commercialized and can be given a second life.

How can you integrate ecodesign into your business practices?

  • By learning about ecodesign strategies and how to implement them
  • By choosing suppliers that follow environmentally responsible practices
  • By targeting ecodesign actions that suit the nature and needs of your business
