Ecodesign incentive bonus: ÉEQ rewards the efforts made in packaging ecodesign

Montréal, June 15, 2021 – Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) is proud to launch its pilot project on the ecodesign incentive bonus as part of the 2021 Schedule of Contributions, with the aim to recognize the ecodesign initiatives for containers and packaging placed on the market in 2019 or 2020.

With the modernization of curbside recycling, within a few years, companies will be responsible for the materials they place on the market, from their design to their recycling. By offering this bonus, ÉEQ shows its commitment to developing the fee structure so that it takes into account the impact of a material across the waste recovery and recycling value chain.

Up to $25,000 per company
The bonus will represent 10% of the amount of contribution for containers and packaging involved in the ecodesign initiative, and this for companies who meet the eligibility conditions and whose initiatives meet the designated requirements. A company can submit multiple applications for a total cumulative bonus of $25,000[1]. The candidates whose bonus applications have been approved by ÉEQ will receive a credit note applied to the contribution balance of the 2022 Schedule of Contributions or for a subsequent year.

Eligibility requirements
To be considered eligible, the company must adhere to the following conditions:

[1] The bonus amount is calculated according to the total amount of marketed packaging or containers during the corresponding calendar year.

  • Be a contributing company compliant with ÉEQ: needs to have submitted its report and paid its contribution to the 2021 Schedule of Contributions in full within the prescribed timeframe;
  • Has completed a detailed report, even if it is considered a low-volume producer;
  • Has placed on the market one or more ecodesign initiatives during the 2019 or 2020 calendar years;
  • Has submitted the bonus application form along with the supporting documentation before September 30th, 2021;
  • Commit to collaborate with ÉEQ in order to document the initiative and give consent for publication of a communication item.

Evaluation criteria
The ecodesign initiatives for admissible containers and packaging will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Initiative framework: describing the issues and identifying ecodesign objectives;
  • Optimized design: strategies to reduce at source and simplify packaging;
  • Responsible procurement: selection and origin of materials and integration of recycled content;
  • Communication and transparency: dialog with the consumer and sorting instructions;
  • End-of-life management: recyclability and compatibility with the curbside recycling system.

The deadline to submit the bonus request is September 30th, 2021.
